4-Year-Old at Home? Get Ready K!

Ready Kindergarten (Ready K) is Renton School District's program for 4-year-olds

By Macaroni KID Renton - Newcastle - Mercer Island February 17, 2024

Do you have a child who will turn 4 on or before August 31, 2024? Here's a new program for your family! Renton School District is launching Ready Kindergarten (Ready K), a free, full-day transitional Kindergarten program in September 2024. It's free pre-Kindergarten for qualified students!

What is Ready K?

Think of Ready K as a year of Kindergarten preparation. It's a full year of school before you start kindergarten. Ready K is for kids who haven't attended preschool or similar programs yet.

To attend Ready K, your child must turn 4 years-old on or before August 31, live within Renton School District boundaries, and have had no access to quality early learning experiences. (If your 3-year-old will turn 4 before August 31, you could qualify.)

How do you qualify?

Eligibility for Ready K is based on financial, academic, and/or social or emotional needs. Children qualify through a screening process. Families must complete an interest form to apply. (It's not a first-come, first-served basis.)

What do kids learn at Ready K?

Ready K focuses on essential academics, social emotional skills, and learning habits to support Kindergarten success. The program will be located in elementary schools across the district. Children will also have specialists classes in music, PE and library. Transportation (school bus) will be free for students who live within their school attendance area but outside the school's walk zone (1-mile radius).

When does it start?

Ready K will run Monday through Friday and follow the Renton School District calendar.

How do you apply for Ready K?

Apply now through the Ready K Interest Form. Note: there's limited availability and not all students who qualify may be accepted.
