Celebrate Earth Day 2024 in the Seattle Area with Kids

Looking for Earth Day events in Renton, Newcastle, Tukwila and beyond? You've come to the right place. We're rounding up all the events for kids, teens and families on Seattle's Eastside and South King County. All events are free!

April 6

Youth Habitat Restoration at Crystal Springs Park

Date: Saturday, April 6, 9:30 am to 2 pm
Best for: Ages 11 to 18

Calling all middle schoolers and high schoolers! Join YESC for a fun-filled day at Crystal Springs Park. What better way to spend your day off from school than outside? Come learn about native plants, forest succession, and noxious weeds that threaten our native ecosystem. Spend time removing noxious weeds, working with your hands, and making some new friends! Did we mention lunch is included?

Pick up is at Renton Library or Burien Library. You'll travel by bus to Crystal Springs Park. Register here

April 11

Guided Tree Walk with Maya Klem, KCD Urban Forestry Coordinator

Date: Saturday, April 11, 10 am to 11:30 am
Best for: All ages

Take an educational tree walk in Tukwila to celebrate Earth Month! This will be a slow-paced walk around the paths at Crestview Park and Duwamish Hill Preserve. Participants will learn about the trees and plants and the importance of native flora and fauna. Paved path on a flat trail, easy walkability. SIGN UP HERE

Family Science Time at Family First Community Center

Date: Thursday, April 18, 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Best for: Ages 5 to 12

Join Environmental Science Center at the Family First Community Center in Renton for drop in science time. Observe the anatomy of flowers, model how plants use nutrients, and put a plant under the microscope to view a new world! These programs are open to all ages, but best recommended for families with scientists in grades K-5th. No registration, just stop by to participate!

April 12

Nature Story Time at Family First Community Center

Date: Friday, April 12, 10 am to 11 pm
Best for: Ages 2 to 5 

Join Environmental Science Center at the Family First Community Center in Renton for nature themed toddler story time. Enjoy stories, movement, and science activities as we learn all about seeds and plants for Earth Day. Great for ages 2-5 with their caregivers. No registration, just stop by to participate. April 18

Earth Day Sewing Circle at Newcastle City Hall

Date: Thursday, April 18, 7 pm to 8 pm
Best for: Ages 10 & up

Learn how to make simple repairs to clothing in this collaborative sewing circle event at Newcastle City Hall. All levels of sewing experience welcome, no experience needed. Basic sewing supplies provided.

April 19

Earth Day Cardboard Construction at Burien Library

Date: Friday, April 19, 4 pm to 5 pm
Best for: Ages 3 & up

Use cardboard boxes and other recycled materials to make something awesome. Ages 3 and older, ages 3 to 7 with adult. Registration not required. Supplies are limited.

April 20

Earth Day Origami at Newcastle Library

Date: Saturday, April 20, 3 pm to 4 pm
Best for: Ages 2 & up

Learn about amazing animals and nature through stories and origami projects with Emily Mallory of Emily's Papercrafts. All supplies provided. Sponsored by the Friends of the Newcastle Library. Ages 2 and older. Registration not required. 

EarthFest 2024 at Bellevue Botanical Garden

Date: Saturday, April 20, 11 am to 2 pm.
Best for: All Ages

Celebrate the very first annual EarthFest at the Bellevue Botanical Garden! Saturday, April 20 will be full of family-friendly interactive activities and games, including rolling garden tours, educational nature-based programs, creative arts, and environmental resource booths. Food will be available for purchase at the Copper Kettle Coffee Bar inside the Garden. This event is free for all. No advance registration is required. 

All Ages Earth Day Volunteer Work Party in Burien

Date: Saturday, April 20, 12 pm to 3 pm
Best for: All ages

Join The Shark Garden to celebrate Earth Day (a couple days early)! The nonprofit organization will have a variety of volunteer activities including: mulching, weeding, sifting compost, and assembling new raised beds. Fun for the whole family and no experience needed. They’ll provide the tools, drinks, gloves, and snacks. Reach out if you have any questions! info@sharkgarden.org. Free Day at National Parks

Date: Saturday, April 20, All Day
Best for: All ages

Visit Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park and Mount Rainier National Park for free in beautiful Washington State. Plan ahead because parking may be busy! Learn more here.

Renton Sustainability Fair

Date: Saturday, April 20, 11 am to 1 pm
Best for: All Ages

Don't miss the Renton Neighborhoods Sustainability Fair at the Renton Community Center. Play with the hands-on science stations, celebrate Earth Day, learn more about sustainability options in the City of Renton, and more. Live music, games, and local food trucks will round out the fun! No registration, just stop by to participate.

Duwamish Alive! Earth Day Restoration Event

Date: Saturday, April 20, 10 am to 1 pm
Best for: Ages 5 and up

Join resident Forest Stewards and the Tukwila community to beautify and create a sustainable native habitat at Duwamish Hill Preserve. We will be removing young blackberries and clearing space for fall plantings. All tools and training provided. Register here.

About the Hill: The unique ecosystems at the Duwamish Hill Preserve highlight oak savannahs, camas prairie, wet sedge meadow, and the tule wetland. The hill itself is a geological wonder and is actually older than Mt. Rainier!

Celebrate Earth Day at The Museum of Flight! 

Date: Saturday, April 20, 10:30 am to 1 pm
Best for: All ages

Enjoy a day of exploring the environment and how aerospace impacts our world and beyond. Activities include ever popular Weekend Family Workshops, planting “Wishes for the Earth” and a fascinating lecture about space trash and how scientists are recycling trash into gas for use in space. April 21

Repair Event plus Kids Earth Day Activities at Burien Library

Date: Sunday, April 21, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm
Best for: All ages

At this free community repair event, skilled volunteer "fixers" will try to repair and mend household items and clothing! They will also have special kids' activities and info tables for Earth Day, which is the next day, April 22. 

At repair events, fixers will try to work on small household and personal items (including some electronics and small furniture), as well as clothing and textiles. Click here for more details and how to make a reservation.

Friends of Saltwater State Park Earth Day Celebration

Date: Sunday, April 21, 10 am to 3 pm
Best for: All ages

Come celebrate earth day with Friends of Saltwater State Park! Educational activities for kids and families are from 10 am to 3 pm and include Live Marine Animals and Creek Macroinvertebrates learning experience, crafts for kids, plus SCUBA Dive: Photos, REEF, YOY Rockfish surveys.

Weed Warriors at Lake Boren Park

City Nature Challenge

Date: Begins April 26 and continues until May 6
Best for: Ages 5 and up

Nature is all around us! Knowing what species are in our city and where they are, helps us study and protect them, but the ONLY way to do that is by all of us – scientists, land managers, and the community – working together to find and document the nature in our area. Look high and low for all nature in the region and share your observations using iNaturalist. Learn more and SIGN UP!

Learn about about our local plants, wildlife and ecosystems to become an environmental scientist during this drop-in science time! Great for all ages. No registration, just stop by to participate!

May 1

Bird Watching Workshop

Date: Wednesday, May 1, 6 pm to 8 pm
Best for: Ages 6 and up

Birds are all around us. Want to learn more about the feathered friends in your neighborhood or yard? Learn how to identify birds, find out more about the species near you, gather helpful resources that can start your birding journey, get hands-on practice with binoculars, and more at this Birding Basics class with WDFW Watchable Wildlife Coordinator Kelsey Hansen.

Earth Month Events

Self-Guided Tree Walk in Tukwila

Branch out with the 2024 Tukwila Tree Challenge. Fill up a water bottle and take a self-guided tree walk in three local parks. Each park will have signs identifying native trees and explaining why trees are essential to the region. By the end of the tree walk, you will know about Western Red Cedars, Dogwoods, Bigleaf Maples, and so much more. Great for all ages.

Plastics vs. Plastics Community Art Project

Newcastle Arts Council is offering the perfect opportunity to take action for this year’s Earth Day 2024 theme: Planet vs. Plastics. Collect all your bottle and jar caps and lids for REUSE as a recycled products mural. The more colorful they are, the better! Bring your clean caps and lids to Newcastle City Hall during regular business hours. Soon enough, you’ll see them brought to new life as a community art project!
