By Macaroni KID Renton - Bellevue - Newcastle - Tukwila November 17, 2024

It’s that magical time of year when the nights grow longer, the cocoa gets cozier, and the lights? Oh, the lights get brighter! This holiday season, the City of Newcastle, WA on Seattle's Eastside and its Community Activities Commission are calling all decorators, from merry minimalists to full-blown Griswold wannabes, to showcase their dazzling creativity in the 2024 Lights of Newcastle Outdoor Holiday Display Contest.

Who Can Join This Festive Fun?

Anyone within Newcastle, WA city limits can enter—yes, that means houses, townhomes, apartments, and condos. Got a balcony? Decorate it. A yard? Fill it with inflatables. A window? Turn it into a glowing masterpiece.

The only requirements are that your display is visible from the street or sidewalk and that your lights shine bright between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m., December 13-18.

How to Enter Lights of Newcastle (It’s Free!)

Joining is easier than finding the last bulb causing the entire strand to fall out. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Register Online: Click here to register by Monday, Dec. 9, 5:00 p.m. It’s quick, easy, and free.

2. Get Your Yard Sign: After signing up, you’ll receive an official contest sign to show your neighbors you’re in it to win it. Make sure it's visible.

3. Set the Stage: Be sure your lights and decorations are up and ready by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13. Let the magic begin!

The Awards (aka Newcastle’s Festive Hall of Fame)

This year, winners will be chosen entirely by community vote—so rally your friends, family, and random acquaintances to cast their votes online! Judging takes place from December 13 to 18, and winners will be announced on Friday, Dec. 20, via social media.

Here are the coveted categories for 2024:

  • Buddy’s Favorite: A kid-approved winner! Think candy canes, elves, and all things whimsical.
  • Griswold Award: Channel your inner Clark Griswold with the most electrifying light display.
  • Misfit Toys Award: The ultimate in inflatables, props, and lawn ornaments. (Think: the bigger, the better!)
  • Traditionally Elegant: A classic, beautifully designed display as timeless as “Silent Night.”
  • All Decked Out: For our apartment, condo, or townhome neighbors—show off your balcony or window brilliance!

If you need some inspiration, check out the Google map of participating displays, available on the City of Newcastle website and at City Hall. Make it a family outing—hot chocolate and caroling are highly encouraged!

Why It’s More Than Just Lights

The lights are dazzling, but this contest is about more than just sparkle. It’s about building holiday traditions that your family will treasure for years to come. Kids adore helping with decorations—whether it’s climbing up a stepladder with Dad (supervised, of course) or insisting that every single ornament goes on the front lawn.

Plus, driving around to admire the displays together is like a magical scavenger hunt, with oohs and aahs guaranteed. It’s a way to connect with your community, share in the season's joy, and make your little corner of Newcastle shine a little brighter.

Need Help?

If you’ve got questions, Amy George, Newcastle’s resident elf (officially known as the Events & Recreation Coordinator), is ready to assist. Please email her at events@newcastlewa.gov.

So, what are you waiting for? Sign up, string those lights, and let’s make Newcastle glow! After all, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is lighting up your yard for all to see.

If your family loves holiday lights, this event will have you decking more than just the halls. Grab your kids, a ladder, and some untangling skills (because those lights always come out of storage in a knot), and transform your home into a sparkling wonderland. It’s not just about the decorations—it’s about creating magical family moments and spreading cheer throughout the neighborhood.
